Privacy Policy

Last updated 30 August 2026

The short version. The calculator runs entirely inside your browser. The prices and costs you type are never sent to us and we never see them. We set no cookies and use no third-party trackers. The only personal information we hold is an email address, and only if you choose to give us one.

This policy explains what Handmade Margin ("we", "us") collects when you use handmademargin.com, why, and what you can do about it. We've written it to be read rather than skimmed past.

Who we are

Handmade Margin is an independent tool for online sellers, built and operated by one person from Queensland, Australia. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or certified by Etsy, Inc. There is more about the business on the About page.

If you have a question about your information, or want to make a privacy complaint, contact us at contact@handmademargin.com. We aim to respond within 30 days.

What the calculator does with your numbers

Nothing leaves your device. Every figure you enter (item price, materials, packaging, postage, your hourly rate) is processed by code running in your own browser. Those numbers are never transmitted to our servers, never stored, and never seen by us or anyone else.

If you close the tab, they're gone. We don't save them, because we never had them.

What we do collect

WhatWhenWhy
Your email address Only if you type it in and tick the consent box To email you when the full product opens, and occasional tips on pricing and profit
A one-way scrambled version of your IP address At the moment you submit the signup form To stop bots flooding the form. It cannot be turned back into your IP address, and we never store the address itself
Country (country only, not your city, region or location) On page visits and signups To know roughly where interest is coming from
Anonymous usage counts. That a page was viewed, that the calculator was used, that a result was a loss, that a signup happened As you use the site To know whether the tool is useful. These are counts with no identifier attached, so they cannot be linked to you or to each other
Referring website (the site name only, never the full address) On arrival from another site To know which sites send people here
Campaign labels from the address bar (for example utm_source or a click ID appended by an advertising platform) If you arrived from an advert or a tagged link To know which campaign brought you. Read from the address bar, held in memory for that visit only, and stored against the signup rather than against you. Nothing is written to your device

What we don't do

If any of this changes, for example if we later add advertising tools that require cookies, we will ask for your consent first and update this page before doing so.

Our lawful basis for using your information

We rely on your consent for the email list. You give it by ticking the box at the signup form, and you can withdraw it at any time by unsubscribing. Withdrawing does not affect anything we did before you withdrew.

For the anonymous usage counts we rely on our legitimate interest in understanding whether the site works. Because those counts carry no identifier, they cannot be traced to you.

Emails we send

We only email people who asked us to. Every email we send will identify us, and will carry a working unsubscribe link that takes one click, costs nothing, and needs no account or password. Unsubscribes take effect straight away.

You can also unsubscribe by emailing contact@handmademargin.com.

Where your information is held

The site runs on Cloudflare's network, and the database sits within Cloudflare's infrastructure. Cloudflare operates servers around the world, so your information may be processed outside Australia, including in the United States and Europe. Cloudflare acts as our service provider and processes this information only on our instructions.

We use no other third-party processors. There is no email marketing platform, no CRM and no analytics vendor holding your details.

How long we keep it

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask us to show you what we hold about you, correct it, or delete it. Email contact@handmademargin.com and we'll action it. We won't charge you and we won't make it difficult.

If you're in Australia

The Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) give you rights to access and correct your personal information. We handle information in line with those principles. If you're unhappy with how we've handled a privacy matter, contact us first, and if we can't resolve it you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

If you're in the UK, EU or EEA

Because this site offers information tailored to sellers in the United Kingdom and the European Union, we treat the UK GDPR and EU GDPR as applying to you. You have the right to access your data, correct it, erase it, restrict or object to how we use it, receive a copy in a portable format, and withdraw consent at any time. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

If you're in California or another US state with privacy legislation

You may request access to or deletion of your personal information, and you may opt out of any sale or sharing of it. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of, but the request channel is the same email address above.

Children

This site is built for people running a business and is not directed at children. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us their details, email us and we'll delete them.

Security

Traffic to this site is encrypted in transit. Access to the database is restricted to the site's own code. We hold deliberately little: no passwords, no payment details, no financial figures. That is itself the strongest protection we can offer you.

If a breach occurs that is likely to cause you serious harm, we will notify you and the relevant regulator as required by law.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top. If the change is significant, particularly if we start collecting something new, we'll say so plainly on the site and, where the law requires it, ask for your consent before the change applies to you.
