About Handmade Margin

Handmade Margin is a free profit calculator for people selling handmade things online. This page explains who runs it, how it is funded and where the fee assumptions come from.

Who runs it

Handmade Margin is an independent software project, built and operated by one person. It isn't a marketplace, an agency, a reseller or a franchise. It is not created by, endorsed by or affiliated with Etsy or Shopify.

Why it exists

Most fee calculators stop at the marketplace's cut and call the rest profit. That's the easy half. The sale that quietly loses money is usually the one where the materials, the box, the tissue paper and the postage you absorbed add up to more than what's left after fees, and none of that shows up on a fee calculator.

So this one keeps going to the end of the arithmetic, and it tells you plainly when an item is losing money rather than burying it in a percentage.

How it's paid for

The calculator is free and has no account. Handmade Margin may be supported by clearly labelled Google advertising and affiliate links, including Shopify links. If a visitor follows a labelled affiliate link and takes a qualifying action, Handmade Margin may earn a commission.

That support does not affect calculator results or editorial conclusions. The calculator, fee guides and scenario tools are designed to make Etsy's published charges easier to understand before a seller sets a price. The site does not sell a subscription or ask for marketplace access.

Where the fee figures come from

The calculator uses Etsy's published seller-fee pages, rather than a third-party fee table. It currently supports shops registered in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia; those are the locations with dedicated, checked assumptions in the tool. The date they were last checked is shown on the calculator.

Etsy fees change and can vary by order. Check the calculator against your payment account, and email contact@handmademargin.com if you spot a mismatch.

What it will never do

• Ask for your Etsy password, or any marketplace login.
• Ask for your consent to occasional email updates unless you choose to subscribe.
• Send the figures you type anywhere. The calculator runs entirely in your browser.
• Sell, rent or share your email address.

The Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy spell out the information and privacy choices in detail, and the Terms of Use are honest about the limits of an estimate.

A word on what the numbers are

These are estimates, worked from figures you supply and published fee rates. They are not accounting, not tax advice and not financial advice, and they don't cover income tax, GST or VAT, refunds, currency conversion or advertising you buy yourself. Your Etsy statements are the authority. For anything consequential, talk to an accountant who can see your actual position.
