About Handmade Margin

Handmade Margin is a free profit calculator for people selling handmade things online, and a paid shop-wide profit tool that is still being built. This page says who runs it, how it's paid for, and where the numbers come from.

Who runs it

Handmade Margin is an independent software project, built and operated by a single person from Queensland, Australia. It isn't a marketplace, an agency, a reseller or a franchise, and it doesn't take money from anyone whose product it mentions.

You can reach a real person at contact@handmademargin.com for anything about the tool, the numbers, a correction, or a complaint, including privacy and data requests. The address is read; it isn't a black hole.

Why it exists

Most fee calculators stop at the marketplace's cut and call the rest profit. That's the easy half. The sale that quietly loses money is usually the one where the materials, the box, the tissue paper and the postage you absorbed add up to more than what's left after fees, and none of that shows up on a fee calculator.

So this one keeps going to the end of the arithmetic, and it tells you plainly when an item is losing money rather than burying it in a percentage.

How it's paid for

The calculator is free, has no account, no adverts, no affiliate links and no sponsored placements. Nothing on this site is here because someone paid for it to be.

The plan is to fund it with a paid tool for the same audience: one that reads your Etsy sales export, applies the fees actually charged on each order, and ranks your whole shop by margin. That paid tool does not exist yet. The signup box on the calculator is a waitlist, not a purchase, and joining it costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

Where the fee figures come from

The rates in the calculator are taken from Etsy's own published seller fee pages, read directly rather than copied from another blog, and checked again whenever we're told they've moved. The date they were last checked is printed at the bottom of the calculator.

Fees change, and countries differ. If you spot a rate that no longer matches what Etsy is charging you, email contact@handmademargin.com. Corrections from people looking at real statements are the most useful thing we get.

What it will never do

• Ask for your Etsy password, or any marketplace login.
• Set a cookie, run a third-party tracker, or load anything from someone else's server.
• Send the figures you type anywhere. The calculator runs entirely in your browser.
• Sell, rent or share your email address.

The Privacy Policy spells all of that out in detail, and the Terms of Use are honest about the limits of an estimate.

A word on what the numbers are

These are estimates, worked from figures you supply and published fee rates. They are not accounting, not tax advice and not financial advice, and they don't cover income tax, GST or VAT, refunds, currency conversion or advertising you buy yourself. Your Etsy statements are the authority. For anything consequential, talk to an accountant who can see your actual position.
